Welcome to a brand of
Mathematical
Services.
One of the features that is emerging in the search for my origins and the origin of my
surname is that of a (big) river. Early holders of the name (certainly) from other lands
seem to have almost invariably arrived and settled via such a river (e.g. the Don, the Ross, the Fowey).
Indeed the (ancient) name itself might have been coined after a river's name (Fowey in Cornwall)
which itself might have been named after another immutable natural object - a beech tree.
Things are becoming a little clearer (temporally) and origins looking a little more ancient
than the startings with the Norman settlers. It's a point to note that these rivers
when all other facts of life seem to be smoohed out and modernised still throw up many
challenges for societies. Nature has the last laugh.
