AngloSaxonDictionary

I bought a good Anglo-Saxon dictionary the other day: 'The Students Dictionary of Anglo-Saxon - Henry Sweet, A, PhD, LLD. It's a useful reasonably comprehensive book. It raises some interesting points. Certainly when you are young (or young at doing something which is probably more appropriate) you look at a dictionary so as to know how to use a word - you get it's 'meaning'. But an Anglo-Saxon dictionary is complied by looking at ancient texts (presumably now a finite number unless new ones are discovered from somewhere) and deducing the meaning and even the grammar, from things like the context. There is no one to ask and no one speaks Anglo-Saxon any longer. So this IS real history, and genuine effort in the undertaking and the veracity of the deductions (that is the meaning of the words). Is it that there are no new dictionaries now because this has all been done (with the finite texts). So we just need to keep the prints modern and relevant to the current audience (like me). Again it seems to be men that are doing it - retired US Navy vets - very good role - better than waging war, I applaud.
