And this association is not just in actual (old) words but in the places and structures of society and in the people. The capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, may derive its name from this word and the name Edwin (ruler and uniter of Northumbria) is a man with these connotations - so much so that he is often synononymous with Edinburgh.
